You can spike with a closed fist, it is legal, but not recommended. When you hit with a closed fist, you don’t have as much control over the ball. When you’re hitting with an open hand you have a much larger flat surface to work with in making contact with the ball.
Usually done in beach volleyball, the spiker uses their closed fist to contact the ball with the knuckles of the index and middle finger. This is an attack hit often used when the ball gets set too close to the net or the opposing blocker's hands.

level 1. · 6y. The advantage to the wide open hand verses a closed hand is control - you can hit a little bit harder with a fist, but not much and the control goes way down. You might see people using a fist on over passes, where the only real goal in terms of control is "down", but even in those positions with a little more thinking you probably could have picked a spot and hit close to as hard as you did with the fist.
In beach volleyball games – it is illegal to tip the ball with an open hand, so most players use their knuckles. To do this, approach in the same way as if you are going in for a spike or hit. You can swing your arm, so as not to give anything away to your opponents. While swinging, make a fist with your hand and use 2 or 3 knuckles to hit the ball.
